![]() ![]() In one scene, a band of two sings a song about the devotion to Lord Krishna. As a businessman, he is invested in the idea of nurturing young talents. He had won the championship trophy when he played for the first time. Lucky are those who make a living from their passion,” he tells him. “I run around all day to feed my stomach. In a scene, a poet is seen reciting his poems to Jaan: “He is a nomad of the world/traversing path, unknown/I’ve heard that when the spine bends/people act like animals/Does this tale, this age-old song still hold strong?/In every corner, there’s a wild, unrestrained frenzy of sounds/Humanity has gone wild /Did you hear the story about the spine bending the truth.” The poet shares with Jaan how his life and his livelihood run on separate tracks. There are pithy lines by minor characters, who are picked for the film because they form a part of the fabric of communal life in Assam. Sagar Desai’s background music includes Assamese folk songs. Her films, made in the style of the documentary, stitches together the vignettes from the lives of her characters and show us the story’s undercurrents, its many subtexts the style lends her films a credence of the real, and the cadence of the local. We see them doing what children do: enjoying baths, playing in a puddle, and looking for their crossbreed Piku, who goes missing. The latter two seem to have a natural flair for performance. Abhijit and Tarali, and the two children their life is centred on, are exceptional, even though they are not trained actors. Those who catch the virus are treated as outcasts, with Jaan not allowing his maid to step inside his house even if she recovers, leaving the weight of household chores on Tora. In scene after well-wrought scene, executed with tremendous deft, and featuring the ambient sounds of Assam’s countryside - the chirping of birds, the chatter of people on the streets, the song of the cicadas - as well as its picturesque landscapes, the film portrays a world in upheaval, where the once-familiar rhythms of existence has been ruptured. What’s the problem?ĭemand and supply shifts have contrived to push up fertiliser prices by about threefold in a year, according to the World Bank. Instead, it will rely on its international supply chains to replace the manufactured product, at least until it can determine the viability of making so-called green ammonia using hydrogen at scale as the substitute feedstock for fossil gas. The facility had been unable to secure “an economically viable long-term gas supply”. That company told the stock exchange last month it plans to close its main urea plant in Brisbane’s Gibson Island by the end of next year. ![]() It might have been also that he wanted - and I'm speaking - this is all supposition - that he might have wanted a clean break from "Key And Peele" at that particular moment in time and really put his stamp on that project. And in this - with this particular project, his vision did not necessarily include my physical presence in the film. KEY: I don't - you know, I don't know why I wasn't in it. And I'm like, I guess that means my spirit was in the movie. It says - you know, it'll say uncredited or cameo by Keegan-Michael Key. Isn't that funny? I see that sometimes in the credits. GROSS: I don't remember you having a small part in that. And he had been doing all of that - actually starting during the MADtv times, all the way into "Key And Peele." And so he was raring to go when we had finished the show. He had had different amalgamations of the script in his mind, and he kept on rewriting it and rewriting it and rewriting it. KEY: Yeah, he had been working on it for about eight years. GROSS: Oh, so he was already working on that. And Jordan was immersed in "Get Out" at the time. We just didn't know what the project would be. And we knew that we would work together again sometime soon. GROSS: But you were still on good terms with each other? But we both felt very strongly that there were other things that we wanted to do, and so we decided to move on. And we were like, yeah, we could probably continue to do this for six years or seven years or maybe even eight years. It just felt like we wanted to move on to other things. That would have been, gosh, 2007, I think. KEY: Yes, I was on MADtv at that point in time. You were doing the MAD show during the previous actor's strike, right? I think the last time we spoke was when "Key And Peele" ended the series on Comedy Central. Keegan-Michael Key, welcome back to FRESH AIR. And they've adapted that into the new book "The History Of Sketch Comedy." He hosted the podcast "The History Of Sketch Comedy," which he wrote with his wife, Elle Key. Now Key has returned to sketch comedy by writing about it. He made his Broadway debut in a show written by Steve Martin called "Meteor Shower" and played Horatio in the New York Public Theater production of "Hamlet," which starred Oscar Isaac as Hamlet. Peele went on to direct the films "Get Out," "Us" and "Nope." Key went on to act in films, including a comedy about improv and sketch comedy called "Don't Think Twice." He co-stars in the TV series "Schmigadoon!" a great show that lovingly satirizes Broadway musicals. When the series ended, Key and Peele split up as a duo. With Jordan Peele, he was half of the sketch comedy duo Key and Peele, which was also the name of their show on Comedy Central. My guest, Keegan-Michael Key, loves sketch comedy - watching it, performing it and now writing about it. |
